Perfectly Me

Hi! I'm Jennifer Brandt a.k.a. J-Ko. I live in Los Angeles and am mom to a ridiculously delicious 3 year old boy. A little (okay, a lot) background...

Up until the age of 4, I had two imaginary friends- Bodice and Beem-Beem. I’m pretty sure I came up with their names when I was watching my Great-Grandmother getting dressed. She was putting on a brassiere, or something like that, and I think used the word “bodice.” I should have realized then that breasts down to my navel would one day be my fate too, but instead my imagination soared and the word “Bodice” stuck with me. Shortly thereafter, “Bodice” was my new “best friend” along with her “Cousin Beem-Beem.” My imaginary friends were my biggest fans. I sang Dionne Warwick love songs to them, and told them stories using words I didn’t even know the meaning of. But one day, my mom noticed I stopped “playing” with them and asked me what happened to them. I told her ever so casually that, “Bodice moved to New York to be an actress, and Beem-Beem went with her.” And that was the end of that.

Cut to 13 years later, on a quest to follow Bodice’s footsteps, I packed my bags and my Los Angeles roots and headed East to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.  Though I was pretty convinced the first year or so that I would never leave New York and would do “thheee-ater” forever, it wasn’t long until I had mice in my apartment and was mugged in broad daylight that made me change my tune. Not to mention, if Bodice was in New York, she had probably grown tired of black box theaters and waitressing—It was time to come home.

A year after graduation, I headed back to Los Angeles and said goodbye to  my "acting" days.  I found myself behind the scenes writing and producing for television and film (“reality tv” to be exact. Name the shitty show, I worked on it).

It was during my pregnancy in 2007, that I discovered blogging and started “Perfectly Disheveled.”  I had no idea that sharing my neurotic thoughts about pregnancy and new mommyhood would lead to writing for other sites including Momlogic, Mommy Tracked, Truu Confessions, and AOL’s Dime Crunch. I am currently the Managing Editor of the food site Good Bite.com as well as Momversation.com and ParentsAsk.com, a popular website for parents seeking advice from renowned experts. Ironically, I personally still have no clue what I'm doing...

As I watch my son Jonah discover the world around him, I think of my imaginary friends fondly and know that their spirit will always be with me… with us. Let’s tell some stories…
