You know what they say: One woman’s trash, is another woman’s treasure! And it when it comes to my friends and their wardrobes, we’re talking treasure troves!
This past month, I had the opportunity to partner with Glad® to host a party of my choice for 15 of my friends. To me a perfect party with the girls includes wine, cocktails, gossip, delicious food, more cocktails, (more food), and if possible fashion. So I figured a clothing swap party was the perfect setting to get all of those elements and then some. Glad’s® longstanding, 28 year partnership with Keep America Beautiful (KAB), has made it a mission to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments. (If we all cloth swapped, think about how much waste we’d save each year… and money!)
In addition, working with Glad® meant I’d have the strongest trash bags at my disposal not only for clean up, but for lugging all of our new (but old) duds back home.
The Set Up…
Invitations
The party was called “Another Woman’s Trash Party” where I invited my friends to EAT. SIP. SWAP. On the kraft paper invitations, guests were instructed to simply bag and bring their unwanted clothing, shoes and accessories. I told them to bring as much as they’d like; after they swapped and “shopped” ‘til they dropped, I was going to take whatever was left and donate it to a local charity. So fun, right?!
To be a little creative (and encourage them to come with “goods,”) I folded the invitations in thirds, and wrapped each of them in a Glad® Black Bag with Drawstring. These bad boys are the strongest trash bags around, so if the girls felt the need to bring everything from jeans, to boots, to big purses and jackets (oh, and they did!), they could be certain everything would arrive in tact- and for the taking! I used bakers’ twine and a kraft paper tag with a “You’re invited” stamp to tie it all together.
Food and Drink
To me, Mexican food and cocktails screams girls night in. Using clothing swap and shopping themes, I gave names to the items: Trashy Tacos, Too Cheesy to Wear Quesadillas, Splurge Worthy Sips (btw, the best cocktails EVER), and Worth Every Penny Chips and Dips.
Party Favors
When I go to a party or an event, rarely do I expect a favor or gift bag. But, man, when there are and when they’re packed with a few little goodies, it definitely leaves a great impression. What’s even better is when you walk away with practical goodies. Um, let’s just say that a box full of Glad® ForceFlex® Black Bags and Glad® Matchware (aka the single most frequently used item in my house), totally hit the spot with the ladies. Plus, I packed the gift bags with Keihl’s lip balm, coupon to premium meal delivery service with Klean LA, a Starbucks gift card, the cutest wish bracelet from the very fab jewelry designer Goli Ghodooshim of GROCKLA, and of course a gift card to a styling session with stylist Robin Saperstein of High Heel in a Haystack (after all, this is party about clothes!)
Speaking of clothes… Let’s talk SWAP!
The rules of the swap were simple. Ladies were given a wad of “Trash Cash” that they had to use to “purchase” any item that they like (from the owner). The owners could “set a price.” Whoever had the most trash cash at the end of the night was given more trash…bags, that is. The real reward went to the two women who brought the most goods. Sarah Maizes and Sarah James of Whoorl.com brought what I’m pretty sure was their entire closets and because of it were given gift cards to Nordstrom.
Clothing was hung from racks and piled on to tables and an accessories table. It was a first come first serve basis… and let me tell you, these girls got serious! It was a shopping bonanza and the mirrors, laden with some inspirational messages, helped everyone try on, assess, and do some damage.
From designers like Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Joie, and All Saints, JBrand and more, I’ve realized that not only do my friends have fabulous taste, but we need to do this swap again soon! The best part about the party is that everyone went home with something and nothing went to waste.
